Full Description:
"Bottom of NewCastle Slope" showing the dimly light interior of the Newcastle Coal Mine in King County, Washington, Asahel Curtis, photographer, June 24, 1909. Large wood timbers are visible supporting the mine opening. Coal cars and miners are visible in the distance. Coal Creek Mine is located on the Newcastle side of Squak Mountain in King County. The Mine belonged to the Pacific Coast Coal Company, formerly the Oregon Improvement Co. The Coal Creek Mine was opened in 1898.

Full Description:
Above ground photograph of a group of miners. Most are standing alongside the tracks on which stand a long line of coal cars. In the background the company buildings. The miners are carrying their lunch pails and canteens. Some have carbide lamps on their caps, other have oil lamps.
