PLEASE READ -- IMPORTANT CHANGES / UPDATES:

There are two important changes PONY Baseball has made across its national footprint, both of which affect Newcastle Baseball for the 2019 season.

1) The DOB cutoff has moved from April 30th to August 31st. This means that any player born between these dates will potentially lose a year of baseball. For instance, a player born in July who played their first year of Coach Pitch (Pinto) in 2018, will now register for their first year of Kid Pitch (Mustang). DO NOT WORRY! During the assessment process, we'll note all these players and make sure they're moved to the appropriate Division depending on their experience, level of play, and peer group.

2) Only USA Baseball-approved bats will be allowed in PONY competition this season. While we allowed some flexibility to this rule in 2018, this year we must abide by the new rule across all Divisions, and not just in those games when we play teams outside our Club. When purchasing a new bat for your players, please look for the USA Baseball stamp (see below). I encourage you to review the new standards HERE before purchasing your new bat. Non-compliant bats will not be allowed during any game or practice this season.

TRYOUTS and ASSESSMENTS: Tryouts (older kids) and assessments (younger kids) will begin in late January. Updated schedules will be posted on the League website soon. Please check back often to make sure you attend the required session(s) for your player(s).

PLAYING UP: Several parents have asked about Playing Up (that is, trying out for a division higher than would be age correct for your player). While we discourage playing up - safety, maturity, leadership, etc - it is not prohibited. Please register for your age-appropriate division and then plan to attend the play-up division tryout/assessment. Coaches and staff running that session will determine whether playing up would make sense for your player.

FIELDS: What a great season we had in 2018, finally back on our home fields at Risdon Middle School. We're excited to again host most of our Shetland, Pinto and Mustang games at Risdon this year. Other games at these ages may be held at Sierra Heights Elementary, and older teams will have home games at Kennydale Lions Park, Highlands Park, or Petrovitsky Park, depending on the division.

There will be a Field Day scheduled before practices begin this Spring. There is some work to be done to make these fields playable after the long offseason. If you are available and willing to help, please let us know.

VOLUNTEERS / COACHING: As you know, Newcastle Baseball is dependent on its parents who volunteer to help in many areas. One of our biggest needs is for Coaches. If you have any interest in helping as a Head or Assistant Coach, at any level, please email coaches@newcastlebaseball.com.

Further, if you're interested in helping with the growth and success of the League, we welcome your attendance at Board Meetings, and have open volunteer positions in the following areas:

  • IT support
  • Special Events Coordinator
  • Sponsorship/Fundraising Coordinator
  • Field Day help
  • Social Media contributors
  • Picture Day coordination

We are all excited about the coming season and look forward to seeing everyone at the ballpark again this Spring.
